ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides a shaped catalyst for forming reaction spaces and/or for providing such spaces with catalytically active surfaces, comprising a structural reinforcer containing iron metal, a layer of heat-resistant supporting material applied to the structural reinforcer and a catalyti- cally active component applied to the supporting material, the body of the structural reinforcer being of iron or steel and the surface of the reinforcer being provided with a non-scaling, adhesive aluminium-iron diffusion layer suitable for anchoring and obtained by tempering aluminium-coated iron or steel for at least 1 minutes at temperature between 600 and 1200°C. The catalysts are useful in purifying exhaust gases from internal combustion engines and from industrial plants.
