ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Alumina shaped bodies, especially fibres, are prepared by hydrothermal treatment of formed and partially dried compositions comprising an aluminium compound, for example aluminium oxychloride, and an organic polymer in a solvent, especially water. The process is useful in providing bodies, especially fibres. of alumina which do not show a phase change to alpha-alumina on strong heating and are thus dimensionally stable in thermal applications.
