ABSTRACT A shared file information access management system in a network environment is described where a network shared desk top contains information regarding the files in the shared network memory. The shared desk top is organized as a type of data base. The shared desk top contains information including icon representations for files, application pointers among files, and textual comments about each file. User computers access the network shared desk top using a network desk top interface protocol that specifies the access requested. A shared desk top access program operates to receive the requests and coordinate the user computer's access to the shared network desk top. In this manner user computers have current access to shared information to facilitate the display and use of data on a shared network memory storage device.
