ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A common address register is used to address locations having a common address in both a main memory and a disk controller data random access memory (RAM) during a block transfer of data in a disk subsystem. Data bits are received by the disk controller and stored in the RAM as data bytes. The common address register stores the address which represents both the RAM location from which the data bytes are transferred and the main memory location into which the data bytes are stored.
