This arrangement provides a simplified technique for using a subscriber's telephone for both telephone messages (voice) and data messages such as e-mail by maintaining the data link open while the phone is idle. The phone (1) and data terminal e.g. PC (2), are connected to the line (4) via a subscriber interface (3) which can distinguish between incoming voice and data messages and route them to the phone (1) or terminal (2). At the access point to the network e.g. exchange (6), network interface (5) distinguishes voice and data and routes them to the PSTN (7) or data network (10).
