A sheet feeder is characterized by comprising a suction carrying means (2), an oblique carrying means (3), a handling member (6), a detecting means (7) located in the downstream of the handling member and detecting a sheet (10) passing through the handling member, and a means (8) for retracting the handling member from the passing sheet while the detecting means is detecting the passing sheet.
