ABSTRACT A shelf assembly, particularly useful as a hospi- tal cart, has a plurality of posts each with a corresponding locking portion spaced from a base end of the post. A shelf is provided which has a plurality of collars of inner transverse cross sections differing from the outer transverse cross sections of respective posts, such that the collars can be slid over respective posts to the locking portions thereof. Following this, the posts can then be rotated about their axes to grip respective collars thereby locking the shelf in a shelf position above the base ends of the posts. A lock holding means is provided for contacting the posts when locked within respective collars, so as to prevent the posts from rotating about their axes. Preferably, all of the posts are equally dimensioned with the posts and collars being ovular in transverse cross sections.
