ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A horizontal shell boiler has a horizontal and cylindrical furnace section in which a fluidised bed is situated. At one end the furnace section communicates with a flue gas transfer section connected to flue tubes extending horizontally through the boiler fluid above and around the furnace section. The furnace section is divided into two portions by a row of inclined water tubes the portion above the water tubes for acting as a flue gas transfer portion. Combustion gases leave the fluidised bed in a vertical direction and pass between the inclined water tubes. The gases then travel horizontally along the flue gas transfer portion to the flue gas transfer section and do not have any significant tendency to entrain the material of the fluidised bed.
