Produces germicidal effect on shell eggs using Ultraviolet (UV) light. For use in poultry egg processing machines. Shell eggs are conveyed under the invention's protective UV hood and receive a dose of UV-c or short wavelength UV light, (less than 280nm). Sensors continuously collect duration of exposure and UV-c intensity measurements. A microprocessor controller unit calculates germicidal effectiveness by comparing said measurements to known UV-c intensities required to kill a variety of bacteria, molds, yeasts and viruses. The invention helps makes shell eggs cleaner and safer for human consumption and does not alter the shell or organoleptic properties of the egg.
