ABSTRACT An improved liner assembly for an ore grinding mill is disclosed, which comprises a plurality of liner segments that are individually mounted to the shell of the mill. Each of the segments bodies defines a mounting surface that engages the shell surface, and a grinding surface that faces inward for comminuting the ore. The sides of each segment are configured so that the cross sectional dimension of the segment decreases toward the mounting surface, thus defining pockets between the segments. Theses tapered pockets avoid the problem of segment removal which results from peening of the segments, and the wedged entry of fragmented material which tends to from an integral structure. Preferably, longitudinal, wedge-shaped inserts are placed and loosely retained in the tapered pockets to protect the mounting surface and prevent the trapped entry of fragmented material.
