13 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention comprises a convection-cooled airfoil for a combustion turbine rotor blade or stator vane. The airfoil comprises an airfoil-shaped spar and a metallic shell bonded thereto, the spar and the shell defining therebetween a plurality of coolant passageways for convective cooling of the airfoil. The passageways are arranged with cross-sectional areas which gradually decrease in the downstream direction so that cooling air flow per unit area increases as the cooling air progresses through the passageways.
