Disclosed is a shield assembly made of a plurality of elements of very simple structure that can be installed in a very easy manner around a chimney toprotect the framing of the floor and ceiling of a house as well as the surrounding walls in the case of a famed-in chimney, when used to surround a chimney which is comprised of thin light weight insulation. The elements of the assembly are devised so that the heat generated by the chimney is dissipated within a plurality of air gaps in open communication with each other, which extend around the chimney all along the same from the floor up to the attic of the house, above the upper ceiling. With such air gaps surrounding the chimney, the thick layer of aninsulation lining or insulation material normally needed to insulate the chimney can be replaced with a thin light weight insulation thereby reducing both the cost and the weight of the elements of the assembly as compared to what has been done so far. Preferably also one of the elements of the assembly is made telescopic so as to easily adapt to any change in the floor-to-ceiling or ceiling-to-ceiling height, that may be encounter in most houses or dwellings. This telescopic element makes the installation of the shield assembly according to the invention simple and easy.
