ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A shield plug inserted in a lower extension of a pressure tube in a pressure tube type nuclear reactor. The shild plug has a coolant injection passage formed therethrough and a ball valve mechanism disposed at an intermediate portion of the passage. The ball valve mechanism is so constructed that it permits a coolant injected through the passage to flow into the pressure tube at the time of exchanging a fuel assembly disposed in the pressure tube and that it blocks the passage by dynamic pressure of a primary circulating coolant introduced in the pressure tube during the normal operation of the reactor.
