A shielding device is provided for protecting wires, cables and the like from rays, heat and the like, in a wire harness manufacturing assembly. The shielding device comprises at least one wire-covering member, such as a tube through which the wire extends. The tube is adapted to be displaced between a wire-revealing position and a wire-concealing position, wherein in the wire-revealing position, the tube is adapted to allow the wire to be exposed to the rays, whereas in the wire-concealing position, the tube is adapted to at least partly shield the wire from exposure to the rays. Typically there are provided a pair of aligned tubes adapted to be slidably displaced towards each other and into a ray-emitting area so as to assume the wire-concealing position therein, and to be slidably displaced away from each other and out of the ray-emitting area into the wire-revealing position. A compressed air source that is in fluid communication with an inside of the tubes is provided for cooling the wire when in the wire-concealing position.
