ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention provides a shield for a slide gate for a metallurgical pouring vessel, the shield having secured to one side thereof a preformed replaceable cover formed of a refractory heat insulating composition. The shield in use is positioned outside of the slide gate and can have a plurality of holes locatable axially with respect to a metal pouring hole or holes of the slide gate. The cover of the shield similarly has a plurality of apertures therethrough corresponding with the holes in the shield. The invention als provides a preformed replaceable cover to be secured to one side of a shield for a slide gate, which cover is formed of a refractory heat insulating material and comprises a pluralit of interfitting platelets which when fitted together form a cover having a plurality of apertures therethrough. - 1 -
