To miniaturize and make compact a shift position detection apparatus for a variable speed gear wherein a shift shaft is moved in an axial direction to perform a speed changing operation. A variable speed gear 70 includes a clutch sleeve 16 disposed for movement in an axial direction on a counter shaft 15, a shift shaft 72 disposed so as to extend in parallel to the counter shaft, and a shift fork 75 coupled and attached to the shift shaft and having an end engaged with the clutch sleeve. In response to a shift operation, the clutch sleeve 16 is moved in the axial direction through the shift fork to select a shift position. A shift position detection apparatus includes F, R and N shift detection portions 76a, 76b and 72b provided on a cylindrical portion 76 of the shift fork, and F, R and N position sensors 181, 182 and 183 individually disposed in an opposing relationship to the shift detection portions. The F shift detection portion 76a and the R shift detection portion 76b are disposed at positions spaced by approximately 60 degrees in a circumferential direction on an outer circumferential surface of the cylindrical portion on a substantially same plane perpendicular to the axis of the cylindrical portion.
