A shin guard has a plurality of holes for ventilation around a roller hockey player's lower leg. A rigid outer cap of the shin guard has a plurality of holesextending generally vertically up to about a plastic knee cap. A removable inner pad has holes generally corresponding to those through the center portion of a wing and the outer cap of the shin guard. Side extensions of the wing are also provided with holes for air flow to the sides of the leg. The rigid outer cap of the shin guard is preferably molded plastic formed to imitate the anatomy of a well-muscled human calf and shin area. A strap system using D-rings securely attaches the shin guard to the player's leg. -9-
