ABSTRACT A turn-assisting method and apparatus for use with the hull of a vessel adapted for navigation in waters having an ice-covering. The hull includes port and starboard portions having a sloped configuration for applying a generally symmetrically distributed bending force to the ice-cover on either side of the vessel during straight-forward travel. The turn assisting apparatus located on each of the port and starboard portions is positioned so as to remain out of contact with the ice covering during straight-forward travel. The turn-assisting apparatus includes a generally vertically oriented ice-crushing wall portion. A positioning mechanism is provided which is adapted for selectively positioning one of the turn-assisting apparatuses in contact with the ice-covering while maintaining the other of the turn-assisting apparatuses out of contact with the ice-covering. When the vessel is turned, the positioning mechanism is actuated to bring the generally vertically oriented ice-crushing wall portion of one of the turn-assisting apparatuses into contact with the ice-covering. A crushing force is applied to the ice by the generally vertically oriented ice-crushing wall surface in contact with the ice-covering, while the other side of the hull continues to apply a bending force on the ice-covering, the imbalance of the horizontal components of the crushing and bending forces assisting in the turning of the vessel.
