Abstract A machine and method for producing coherent self-sustaining sticks of shirred flexible tubing. The machine comprises in combination, a mandrel and means for shirring the tubing on the mandrel. An annular passage means is adjacent the shirring means. The passage engages the shirred tubing and com- pacts it on the mandrel. Unlike prior art tubing the machine produced by the above machine is coherent and self-sustaining. A method of shirring flexible tubing into a coherent self-sustaining stick is also described. The method comprises advancing a flexible tubing over a mandrel to and through a shirring passage. In the passage a predetermined pattern of pleats is formed in the tubing. The pleated tubing is advanced through an annular restraining passage. An outer surface of the pleated tubing is subjected to a restraining force. The said tubing is then compacted about the mandrel.
