A shock absorber for damping the oscillations of a tub-drum unit of a household clothes washing machine. The shock absorber comprises a tubular housing and a rod reciprocatingly slidable therein, which are polygonal in cross-sectional shape, having sides of equal number and form, so as to coincide reciprocally at any shock absorber operative state, to allow a friction means fixed to the rod always to exert steady and evenly distributed braking action on the tubular housing. The shock absorber may be made with a removable and self-lubricating structure.
