-52- ABSTRACT A heel support for providing both effective shock absorption at heel strike and during the first 25% of the gait cycle, and effective rearfoot control to ensure proper foot function during the remaining phases of the gait cycle. The heel support assembly has a firm, semi-rigid support portion and a compressible cushioning portion, the cushioning portion being configured to collapse under the heel of the foot at heel strike, so that the heel support assembly absorbs the shock of the heel strike, and also collapses on the lateral side of the orthotic so as to invert the rearfoot from a first pre-selected position to a second pre-selected position; normally, the first selected position is about 0°- 2° inverted and the second position is about 4°-6° inverted. A heel post portion is provided on the medial side of the heel support assembly to arrest eversion of the rearfoot portion at a third predetermined position at about 25% of the gait cycle, the third position being substantially at the neutral position so that the foot is prepared for the propulsion phase of the gait cycle. The heel support may be mounted to the heel portion of an orthotic for placement in an article of footwear, or may be formed integrally with the heel portion of the article of footwear itself.
