An outsole (10) for an item of footwear. The outsole is provided with a lower surface (12) having a central portion (14) and a peripheral portion (16). Also provided are a plurality of resilient shock absorbing strike plates (20, 22) which extend from, and are disposed about, the peripheral portion (16) to define a central cavity (30) dis- posed below the central portion (14). Each strike plate has an inwardly sloped wall (26) adjacent the central concavity. This sloped wall (26) is disposed at an obtuse angle to the central portion (14). Also provided is an elastic membrane (32) connecting a plurality of the strike plates (20, 22) and extending through the central concavity (30). The membrane (32) has a stiffness less than of one of the strike plates (20, 22) to which it is connected.
