Shoe press that includes a first and second roll. The first roll may include a first flexible roll sleeve positioned to circulate around a first stationary carrier and at least one first shoe, and the at least one first shoe may include a substantially flat support surface for an interior side of the first flexible roll sleeve. The second roll may include an endless belt positioned to circulate around a second carrier and at least one second shoe, and the at least one second shoe may be supported on the second carrier and may include a substantially flat support surface. The substantially flat support surfaces of the at least one first and the at least one second shoes may be arranged to extend substantially parallel to each other, and the first and second rolls may be positioned to form a press nip between the at least one first and the at least one second shoe. At least one of the at least one first shoe and the at least one second shoe may be pressed against the other. 19
