Shoe soles for use on athletic shoes such as curling shoes requiring flexibility in the metatarsal area are often unnecessarily complicated in terms of structure. A relatively simple shoe sole with a flexible metatarsal area is defined by a planar, flexible base for supporting the foot of the wearer, a side wall extending upwardly from the periphery of the base, and an elongated groove in the top edge of each side of the side wall in the metatarsal area for facilitating flexing of the shoe sole during use.
