Shopping bags are either "paper or plastic". Most shoppers choose plastic, since plastic bags are easier to carry -using the handles, hooked over the person's fingers-, specially if more than two bags are needed. However, carrying several plastic bags -specially if the contents are heavy- can be awkward and painful (on the fingers and/or palms). This is especially true in the case of senior citizens, arthritis sufferers or handicapped persons who can only use one arm/hand. While shopping wire or metal baskets on wheels are sometimes used, they are, in general, bulky and could be prohibitively expensive for some people.
