The invention provides the SHORT-ROOT (SHR) gene (which encompasses the Arabidopsis SHR gene and its orthologs and paralogs), isolated nucleic acids of SHORT-ROOT(SHR), including, but not limited, to coding sequences, promoters and regulatory regions of SHR. The invention further provides gene products of SHR, including, but not limited to, transcriptional products such as mRNAs, antisense, and ribozyme molecules, and translational products such as the SHR protein, polylpeptides, peptides and fusion proteins related thereto. The invention also provides antibodies to SHR gene products, and the use of the foregoing to improve agronomically valuable plants. The SHR gene is expressed specifically in root and hypocotyl progenitor tissues of embryos, and in roots and stems. More specifically, SHR is expressed in tissues internal to the endodermis, namely, the pericycle, phloem, protoxylem and procambium. SHR expression controls cell division of certain cell types in roots, affects the organization of root and stem, and affects gravitropism of aerial structures. SHR functions as a positional signal in root radial pattern formation through spatially restricted intercellular movement.

L'invention concerne le gène SHR de racine courte (SHORT-ROOT)(qui comprend le gène SHR d'Arabidopsis ainsi que ses orthologues et paralogues), des acides nucléiques isolés de SHORT ROOT (SHR), comprenant, entre autres, des séquences de codages, des promoteurs et des zones régulatrices de SHR. L'invention concerne, par ailleurs, des produits géniques de SHR, dont, entre autres, des produits de transcription, tels que des ARNm, des molécules antisens et ribozymiques, et des produits de traduction, tels que la protéine SHR, des polypeptides, des peptides et des protéines de fusion associés.
