TITLE OF THE INVENTION Short-Term Storage Device for Banknotes and the Like ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A short-term storage device for banknotes which can be used in banknote reading apparatuses includes a transportation system, an intermediate storage device and a control device. The intermediate storage device is formed by a rotatable drum with endless belts which are laid at one side against the cylindrical surface of the drum, a switching device and a drive unit together with sensors connected to the control device. The endless belts hold the banknotes which are stored in a bundle fast on the drum. The drive unit can drive the drum in rotation in one of the two directions of rotation. With a full 360° rotary movement, the banknote which is supplied by the transportation system is stored in the intermediate storage device on the cylindrical surface, the successively stored banknotes forming the bundle. When the drum performs a full revolution in the opposite direction, the bundle is returned to the transportation system through a mouth opening of the intermediate storage device.
