ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A mothod ant apparatus for aligning track ant compacting ballast thorobotween. A pair of shoos contouret to fit the shoulter of the ballast is placet in contact with the shoulter whereby each shoe is locatet on the outsido of a respective one of the rails ant extents in a longitudinal direc- tion along tho shoulter. A vibration tevicé is uset to fluitize portions of tho ballast beno-th each of the shoes and between each shoe ant the ents of the atjacent ties. A lifting jack is articulately connectet to each shoe unt tho two jacks apply a lifting force to the rails substantially equal to tho woight of the track by means of laterally and vertically atjustable clamps atapted to grasp each of the rails. A lateral force in that applied to the rails by means of the clamps to displace the track in a substantially horizontal position through said fluidizet ballast. The shoes have an appro- priate surface area whereby the sppliet forces per unit area on the shoes are of a magnitude to substantially prevent vertical and lateral movement of the shoes in thc ballast during the vibration and alignment operation.
