A shrinkable iridescent film constitutes an oriented multilayer coextruded iridescent film having at least 10 generally parallel, very thin layers of substantially iniform thickness in which the contiguous adjacent layers are of heat shrinkable thermoplastic resinous material, each of which is heat shrinkable in at least one dimension in the plane of the film, the continuous adjacent layers being substantially uniformly shrinkable so as to have refractive indexes which differ by at least 0.03. The shrinkable film is made by selecting appropriate thermoplastic resinous materials, coextruding them into a thick film and then subjecting the film to orientation below the heat set temperature of the resinous materials.
Cette invention se rapporte à un film iridescent rétrécissable, qui forme un film iridescent coextrudé multicouche orienté ayant au moins dix couches très minces généralement parallèles, d'épaisseur essentiellement uniforme, les couches adjacentes contiguës étant en matériau résineux thermoplastique thermorétrécissable et chacune de ces couches étant thermorétrécissable dans au moins une dimension dans le plan du film. Les couches adjacentes continues sont rétrécissables de façon essentiellement uniforme, de façon à présenter des indices de réfraction qui diffèrent d'au moins 0,03. On fabrique ce film rétrécissable en sélectionnant des matériaux résineux thermoplastiques appropriés, en coextrudant ces matériaux pour former un film épais et en soumettant ensuite ce film à une opération d'orientation à une température inférieure à la température de stabilisation thermique des matériaux résineux.
