Abstract of the Disclosure A shuttle drive is disclosed for a storage and retrieval machine having a shuttle mounted on a carriage which is vertically movable on a mast for carrying objects to and from overhead storage spaces. The mast is mounted on a base and the mast and base together travelable to designated locations. The shuttle comprises a first plate mounted on the carriage and a second plate movably mounted on the first plate and movable in opposite transverse directions relative to the mast. The shuttle drive means moves the second plate in the transverse directions and includes rotatable means mounted on the first plate and a cable having a portion of its length wrapped around the rotatable means. The cable includes ends attached to the second plate which are spaced apart in substantially the same directions as the movement directions of the second plate. Rotation of the rotatable means results in corresponding rotation of the wrapped portion of the cable on the rotatable means and thereby movement of the cable ends and the second plate in the transverse directions.
