ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A cutting tool bit the cutting of cast iron utilizes a ceramic system having a critical metal oxide/ SiO2 ratio between 1.2 and 3.0:1. The cutting tools are made by blending a Si3N4 base powder and a metal oxide powder, which is Y2O3, ZrO2 or MgO, hot pressing the blended powders at 5000 to 6500 psi and 1700° to 1750°C for 3 to 8.5 hours, and cooking the hot pressed body without pressure at an average rate of 100°C/hr.
