A side sill includes an inner upper leg having a leading edge adapted to be attached to the deck plate of a flat rail car. The inner upper leg extends from the flat rail car to a generally horizontal connecting leg extending from the inner upper leg to an outer leg. An upper portion of the outer leg extends from the connecting leg down to a portion where the outer leg can be connected by the deck plate by welding or the like. A lower portion of the outer leg extends from the deck plate to a generally horizontal connecting leg which provides attachment for cross brace members, bolster assembly components and the like. The welding of the deck plate to the leading edge of the inner upper leg and to the outer leg provides a tube configuration to the assembled side sill greatly increasing the rigidity of the flat rail car.
