Abstract of the Disclosure: Side sills for two-axle railroad freight cars transmit horizontal buffer forces, accept a vertical cargo load and support devices for mounting axles. The object of the invention was to provide a side sill for two-axle railroad freight cars which was formed of simple, economically produc- ible components, which allowed a simple and economical configuration of required cross members, which reduced noise emission of a running gear and which improved aerodynamic properties in the region of an underframe. Therefore, the side sill of the invention is formed of a single metal sheet of uniform wall thickness being bent a number of times and extending from buffer beam to buffer beam of the railroad freight car. The side sill has a joint-free construction in cross-section. An upper longitudinal end of the side sill has three steps, wherein an uppermost step forms a loading plane, a central step forms a support for a floor covering and a bottom step forms a support for cross members of the railroad freight car.
