Apparatus for use in an ion exchange unit or column comprising a riser pipe, a port (16) coupled to one end of said pipe, a first rigid cylinder (64) having apertures therein mounted concentrically on the pipe, a port coupled to the space between the pipe and said cylinder (64), a mesh sleeve (74) concentrically mounted about the cylinder (64), a sieve (84) mounted about the mesh sleeve (74), a second rigid cylinder (94) concentric with the pipe and near its outer end, a second mesh sleeve (104) mounted about said second rigid cylinder (94), and a sieve bag (114) containing the second mesh sleeve (104). The aperture size in said sieve material is only sufficiently fine to prevent the passage of ion exchange resin beads.
