ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A transmitter receives power over a two wire current loop. The transmitter includes a first capacitor which is charged to a reference potential so as to generate a reference charge packet and a second capacitor which is chargedto a sensor potential so as to generate a measurement charge packet. The sensor potential is representative of a process variable to be measured by the transmitter. The reference potentials are selected. from a first and second reference potential, each of a polarity opposite the other. The transmitter also includes an integrator which provides an output representative of a time integral of the charge packets. The transmitter also has a plurality of switches formed in a semiconductor substrate. Each switch has a semiconductor junction between a terminal on the switch and the substrate. When the potential at a switch terminal has a magnitude large enough to forward bias the junction, the switches leak charge. A comparing circuit in the transmitter actuates the switches to transfer reference charge packets of one polarity and measurement charge packets to the integratingcircuit until the integrating output crosses a threshold potential and thereafter to transfer a reference charge packet of the opposite polarity and a measurement charge packet to the integrator, such that the potential at a switch terminal is less than the reference potentials.
