Abstract of the Disclosure Disclosed is a signal converter using weighted capacitances which, unlike prior converters of this type, is able to function either on an A/D or D/A basis. The converter includes a charge generation device with a single set of weighted capacitances and a charge accumulation device which includes second capacitances and which is coupled with the charge generation device. The charge generation device is adapted to generate different charges by means of which the charge in the charge accumulation device may be gradually modi- fied. A control device is adapted to operate the converter in such a manner that it performs a digital-to-analog conversion operation wherein a charge related to a digital value is built up in the charge accumulation device or that it performs an analog-to-digital conversion operation wherein a charge initially stored in the charge accumulation device and corresponding to an analog input value is gradually modified towards a predetermined reference value, e.g. zero.
