ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A succession of emergency-phone stations is distrib- uted at intervals of 1 or 2 km along the length of a highway connected to a throughgoing communications channel provided with a power line. Each phone station is provided with a set of flash lamps which can be blinked in accordance with differing blinking schedules, and with a storage capacitor which stores flash energy. When a lamp at a station is flashed, the storage capacitor dis- charges and draws charge from the power line, the charging time- constant of each station being different due to differing dis- tances from a central powering station. To impose a degree of order on the multiple-time-constant capacitor-charging network, central clocking action is employed, all the lamp ignitions occurring at each individual station being referenced to clock- ing signals common to all stations, and all the blinking sched- ules at all activated stations having a fixed phase relationship. to each other. This predetermines the times and sequences at which the various storage capacitors will draw charging current All storage capacitors have the same capacitance C, so selected that t0/T=0.5 to 3, preferebly 1.25, to 0 being the charging time allotted, T being equal to R Cges, wherein Cges equals the combined capacitance of the maximum number of stations which are selectable for simultaneously flashing, R being the charging resistance to the most distant station. This transfers maximum energy to the storage capacitors, although not necessarily maxi- mum voltage. The recharging of each storage capacitor is dis- continued as soon as a predetermined amount of energy has been accumulated, with the result that the flash energies at the nearest and most remote stations is equalized. -1-
