ABSTRACT The quality of a received data signal is calculated for each of two antennas and the antenna with the better reception is selected. To calculate signal quality, the received data signal is clocked into a three bit shift register at four times the data rate. If all three data samples are not the same, a noise flag is set. A total of fourteen bytes of noise flag information is stored for each antenna. Flag rates, which are defined as the number of flag bits divided by the number of bytes, are calculated for each antenna. If the non- selected antenna has been disconnected for fourteen bytes or more, its flag rate is set to 5/14. If the flag rate of the presently selected antenna is greater than the flag rate of the non-selected antenna, an antenna switch occurs. Prior art antenna diversity systems typically base antenna switching decisions on the relative signal strength of the incoming signal at each antenna.
