ABSTRACT The present invention is concerned with a method for the production of silage bymicrobial conversion of silage crop during an aerobic phase and a subsequent anaerobic phase, wherein the anaerobic phase takes place in the presence of lactic acid bacteria, preferably Lactobacillus plantarum bacteria which produce a Clostridium-inhibiting factor, in particular a proteinaceous Clostridium-inhibiting factor. The invention is also concerned with novel Lactobacillus plantarum species whichproduce a Clostridium-inhibiting factor, in particular a proteinaceous Clostridium- inhibiting factor.
