ABSTRACT A silencer for an aircraft piston engine is disclosed which has inner perforated metal sheets and at least one joining sleeve for connection to an exhaust gas duct. The silencer has a rectangular cross section body of varying configuration. The large walls of the rectangle converging toward the silencer exit opening and the short walls of the rectangle diverging toward the exit opening. Perforated sheets extending parallel to the converging walls have end walls at their upstream ends form with the converging walls cooling chambers open at their downstream ends. The cooling chambers receive the exhaust gases from the space between the converging perforated sheets to be cooled therein by the airflow from the propellor flowing along the silencer walls.
