ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An electrical storage lead battery is realised in a precursor assembly stage, capable of being converted into an operative active storage battery merely by addition of electrolyte i.e. pure sulphuric acid or sulphuric acid containing phosphoric acid; this precursor assembly has unlimited shelf life. The precursor assembly consists of positive plates, negative plates interleaved between the positive plates, and separator plates inserted between adjacent positive and negative plates, all encased within a housing in dry condition. The separator plates consist of a densely compressed compact containing: (a) 70% to 100% of pulverized silicon dioxide capable of absorbing the liquid electrolyte and having the property of being converted thereby into pressure-resistant gel; and (b) 0 to 30% of fibres of glass or any other acid-resistant and oxidation-resistant material. The particulate solid may be a substance other than silica, provided it has the property, on absorbing electrolyte, of being converted into the strong gel form. Silica particles of 10 to 20 micron sizes are effective. The operative lead storage battery has very high recycling life, i.e. as many as 350 rechargings following complete discharge.
