ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for producing a silicon carbide fiber having a high tensile strength which consists of: (1) subjecting a polysilane having an Si-Si bond and no halogen atoms to polycondensation reaction by at least one process of addition of a poly- condensation catalyst, irradiation and heating to produce a polycarbosilane containing no halogen atoms, (2) reducing the content of low molecular weight compound contained in said polycarbosilane by treating said polycarbosilane with at least one treatment selected from the group of treatments consisting of contacting said polycarbosilane with a suitable solvent, aging said polycarbosilane at a temperature of 50°-700° C and distilling said polycarbosilane at a temperature of 100°-500° C, to produce a polycarbosilane product having a softening point of higher than 50° C, (3) dissolving said polycarbosilane product in a solvent or melting said polycarbosilane product to prepare spinning solution or spinning melt, and spinning said spinning solution or spinning melt into a fiber, and then (4) baking the thus obtained fiber at a temperature of 800°-2,000°C, under vacuum or at least one non-oxidizing atmosphere selected from the group consisting of an inert gas, CO gas and hydrogen gas to form a silicon carbide fiber.
