T-4387-336 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE SILICON METAL UPGRADING FOR HIGH PURITY APPLICATIONS A process for purifying silicon metal by (1) density separation of ground silicon using a heavy liquid separating fluid such as acetylene tetrabromide, methylene bromide, bromoform, etc., in combination with a diluent (2) leaching the purified product from step (1) especially with hydrochloric acid under elevated temperatures and (3) smelting said silicon (purified by steps (1) and (2)) by contact of the molten silicon with (a) an impurity-oxidizing gas such as a mixture of Freon-12TM and oxygen and (b) a silica-based slag such as a mixture of SiO2/CaO/CaF2 to economically produce a high purity silicon suitable for the semi-conductor, electronic, photovoltaic, or metallurgical industries.
