A silver catalyst for the production of ethylene oxide having 5 to 25% by weight, based on the amount of a finished catalyst, of finely divided metallic silver and 0.001 to 0.05 gram equivalent weight of cesium per kg of the finished catalyst carried on an a-alumina carrier having the outer surface thereof and the surface of pores in said carrier coated with amorphous silica, and a method for production thereof by supporting finely divided metallic silver and cesium and then subjecting the supported carrier to a high temperature heat treatment in an inert gas at a temperature of 400° to 950°C.

Catalyseur d'argent pour la production d'oxyde d'éthylène, renfermant 5 à 25 % en poids d'un catalyseur fini sous forme d'argent métallique finement divisé, et 0,001 à 0,05 d'équivalent-gramme de césium par kg de catalyseur fini, sur un support d'alpha-alumine, dont la surface externe et la surface des pores internes sont revêtues de silice amorphe; le catalyseur est obtenu en soumettant l'argent métallique finement divisé et le césium sur support à un traitement thermique entre 400 et 950 degrés C dans un gaz inerte.
