-23- A SIMPLIFIED PROCEDURE FOR THE ISOLATION OF ANALYTICALLY PURE VICINE [2,6-diamino-4,5-dihydroxypyrimidine 5-(B-D glucopyranoside)] AND CONVICINE [2,4,5-trihydroxy-6-amino- pyrimidine 5-(B-D glycopyranoside)] ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Conventional methods of preparing vicine and convicine utilize relatively slow, expensive and ineffi- cient procedures and considerable difficulty is encounter- ed in obtaining pure concentrations of either chemical. The present method overcomes disadvantages inherent in con- ventional procedures and produces an exceptionally high quality product. A crude extract of vincine and convicine is first prepared by using a protein-rich concentration of faba beans or the like which is extracted with a basic aqueous-organic solvent which is then concentrated by evaporation. The pH is then adjusted so that crystalliza- tion of the vicine and convicine takes place and the crystals are harvested by centrifugation or the like thus producing a crude vicine-convicine isolate. The vicine can then be extracted from the isolate by adjustment of pH due to the fact that the pH has a differential effect on the solubility of the vicine and convicine.
