A mat profile and a mat like assembly constructed therefrom comprising an extrusion having a generally thin rectangular shape and including upper and lower planar surfaces of different slightly widths. The upper and lower surfaces of the profile are connected on one side at complimentary peripheral edges by at least one angled or beveled edge surface. In preferred embodiments, upper planar surface of the profile may carry decorative layers. The profile can be cut mitered and assembled to form a simulated mat for surrounding a framed art subject. The mat profiles may also include securing means such as adhesives and snap-in mechanisms for securement to a second surface, including another profile. A plurality of simulated mats may also be assembled for a simulated mat structure having different decorative surfaces and the appearance of multiple layers.
