L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant de faire fonctionner un spectromètre de masse. Ce procédé consiste à fournir au moins deux sources ioniques différentes, et à coupler des flux ioniques simultanément à partir d'au moins deux sources ioniques différentes au spectromètre. Un autre procédé de fonctionnement d'un spectromètre consiste d'abord à coupler un flux ionique à partir d'une première source ionique au spectromètre, puis à coupler un flux ionique à partir d'une seconde source ionique au spectromètre, ensuite à coupler un flux ionique à partir de la seconde source ionique au spectromètre, et enfin de coupler un flux ionique à partir de la première source au spectromètre.
