This invention concerns the detection of neural damage to the optic nerve, optic radiations and white matter of the visual brain indicative of various neurological disorders but with particular application to multiple sclerosis. The method involves simultaneous measurement of the shape and latency of responses to visual stimuli presented simultaneously in different parts of the visual field of the two eyes, separating out linear and nonlinear response components, and most particularly separating out binocular interaction responses to assess neural function within each half of the visual cortex. Because rough retinotopicity is maintained in the optic nerve, through the optic radiations and the visual cerebral cortex, stimulation of the separate parts of the visual field permits isolation of responses from different component parts of these neural elements and therefore from the results obtained an objective assessment of damage to these separate neural components can be made simultaneously.

La présente invention concerne la détection de dégâts nerveux du nerf optique, de radiations optiques et de substance blanche du cortex visuel qui renvoient à divers troubles neurologiques, et s'applique particulièrement à la sclérose en plaques. Cette technique consiste à mesurer simultanément la forme et la latence de réponses à des stimuli visuels présentés en différents points du champ visuel des deux yeux, de séparer les composantes linéaires et les composantes non linéaires des réponses, plus particulièrement les réponses d'interaction binoculaire afin d'évaluer la fonction nerveuse à l'intérieur de chacune des moitiés du cortex. Comme la localisation rétinienne est conservée dans le nerf optique, au niveau des radiations optiques et dans le cortex visuel, la stimulation de zones distinctes du champ visuel permet d'isoler les réponses en provenance de différentes parties de composantes de ces éléments nerveux. Par voie de conséquence, il est possible de procéder à une évaluation simultanée des dégâts subis par des zones nerveuses distinctes.
