-1- Abstract A process is described for the simultaneous hydro- cracking or coprocessing of coal and petroleum pitch. The pitch is obtained by upstream distillation of heavy hydrocarbon oils to produce a 100% pitch fraction. A slurry of the pitch and coal is passed through a confined hydrocracking or coprocessing zone, and the effluent emerging from the zone is separated into a gaseous stream containing a wide boiling range of material and a slurry stream containing heavy hydrocarbons. The use of pitch rather than lower boiling distillates results in higher net distillate yields and better quality distillates.
