ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention provides a method of treating an exposed face of a zone of solid slag and bound refractory material, provided as a filling for a cavity in a body of ferrous metal, to bind, or to strengthen the binding of, refractory particles at said face, in which method a metal in particulate metallic form is reacted exothermically in a reaction-mixture thereof with a compound of another metal to yield, as reaction product a molten slag and said other metal in the metallic state and the molten slag contacts said refractory particles at said face and sets to a solid state.
